The First Martyrs

The Massacre of the Innocents was painted in oil on an oak panel by Peter Paul Rubens circa 1611-1612 and it now hangs in The Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto, Canada.

Herod the Great, King of Judea, ordered the execution of all male children living in Bethlehem who were two years old and under. This gruesome episode is described in the Gospel of Matthew and it is the fulfillment of the prophecy in Jeremiah 31:15.

This is what the LORD says: "A voice is heard in Ramah, mourning and great weeping, Rachel weeping for her children and refusing to be comforted, because they are no more." ( NIV)
